Standing Up For Public Lands: The Outdoor Alliance's Public Lands Pledge
The Outdoor Alliance is a coalition of organizations representing human-powered recreation including skiing, mountain biking, paddling, hiking, and rock climbing. Located in DC, the organization advocates for policies that protect public lands and ensure that people have access to the outdoors.
Our vision is that all Americans have opportunities to get outside and experience a spectrum of sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities, from close-to-home trails to wild and remote backcountry destinations.
The New Belgium Family Foundation began supporting the Outdoor Alliance in 2017 after adding Land & Water Stewardship to our focus areas, and in reaction to the attack on public lands by the Trump administration. We have admired OA’s ability to work with multiple stakeholders and across party lines to secure some key victories in the last few years, including the permanent authorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund.
In November 2019, the Outdoor Alliance launched the Public Lands Pledge. OA’s goal is to gather 10,000 signatures to deliver to decision-makers in Washington DC in early 2020. The purpose of the pledge is to demonstrate to lawmakers that there is broad support for public lands, and that while supporters of public lands come from many walks of life, they speak with one voice.
