Get to Know a Mighty Partner: Jubilee Justice

Mighty Partner: Jubilee Justice

Who they are: Their mission is to heal and transform the wounds suffered by the people and the land through reparative genealogy and regenerative agriculture. Jubilee Justice envisions an America where the institutional injustices concerning land, race and money, that are rooted in a history of extraction and exploitation, both spiritually and materially transform toward justice, equity and repair.

Why their work matters right now: Systemic discriminatory practices from loan agencies, extension offices and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have forced Black farmers out of landownership and farming since the early 20th century. In addition, mainstream farming practices create toxic landscapes, biodiversity loss and soil degradation. Jubilee Justice’s Rice Project is proving that profitable, regenerative, climate-friendly solutions exist—good for farmers, environment and community. As a bonus, sustainably produced rice is a carbon drawdown solution promoted by another partner of ours, Project Drawdown.

Did you know: The number of Black farmers has decreased from one million farmers in 1920 to less than 33,000 in 2017.

How you can support them: Follow Jubilee Justice’s stories on Instagram and donate to support their important work. Or, if you are looking for an investment opportunity, their sister organization Potlikker Capital is working to provide low interest loans to BIPOC farmers at the intersection of racial and climate justice. Let us know if we can make an introduction for you to these two powerful teams.

Mic drop: “If you want to understand wealth and inequality in this country, you have to understand Black land loss.”

We’re in a defining moment—a moment where we can choose to be overwhelmed, disconnected and discouraged, or where we can choose to be positive, embrace change and lift up the work of others seeking a better future together. We’re proud to support the work of the people and organizations out changing this world for the better—for all of us. Some may be small, some large. All are mighty. Each month, we’ll be highlighting one of our Mighty Partners and we encourage you to get to know them, support them, and share their work with your friends, families and colleagues. Let’s get to work.
